How to Take Accurate Body Measurements

by | Jul 7, 2023

Take accurate body measurements: When it comes to creating your own clothes, achieving a perfect fit is essential. One of the first steps in sewing custom-fit garments is taking accurate body measurements. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced sewist, mastering this skill is crucial for creating clothing that flatters your body shape. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the process of taking precise body measurements to ensure your handmade garments fit like a dream.

Gather Your Tools

Before you start measuring, gather the necessary tools: a flexible measuring tape, a mirror, a notepad, and a pencil. Having these items at hand will make the process smoother and more efficient.

Wear Appropriate Clothing

To obtain accurate measurements, wear close fitting clothes like leggings and vest top or undergarments that represent the type of clothing you intend to make. Loose or bulky garments can distort the measurements, affecting the final fit of your handmade clothes.

Measure the Bust

Stand up straight with your arms relaxed by your sides. Wrap the measuring tape around the fullest part of your bust, ensuring it’s parallel to the floor and not too tight or too loose. Record this measurement in inches or centimetres.

Determine the Waist Measurement

Locate your natural waistline by bending sideways; the crease that forms is your waistline. Wrap the measuring tape around your waist, making sure it’s snug but not constricting. Take the measurement and note it down.

Find the Hip Measurement

Stand with your feet together and measure the fullest part of your hips, typically around 7-9 inches (18-23 cm) below your natural waistline. Ensure the measuring tape is parallel to the floor and snug but not tight. Record the measurement.

Capture the Inseam

For pants or shorts, measure the inseam length. Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart and measure from the inside of your leg, from the crotch to your desired pant length. This measurement will help you create bottoms that hit at the right spot on your legs.

Determine Other Relevant Measurements

Depending on the garment you’re creating, additional measurements may be necessary. These can include shoulder width, arm circumference, sleeve length, and more. Identify the measurements specific to your project and document them carefully.

Taking accurate body measurements is an essential step in creating made to measure clothing. By following these guidelines and using the right tools, you’ll be able to obtain precise measurements the best and comfortable fit. Remember to keep your measurements up to date as your body may change over time. Armed with this knowledge, you’ll have the confidence to sew garments that make you look and feel amazing!
